Prayers of good luck and God’s speed launch WYC boaters into new season on the first Sunday of June each year, when the Wyandotte Yacht will hold its Annual Blessing of the Fleet.
Starting at 2 p.m. at the water’s edge in front of the clubhouse, a Memorial Service is held honoring those persons lost at sea and in memory of our loved ones who have passed away during the past year. Officiating at the service and the following boat blessing is our Fleet Chaplain, Father Stan Fraser, Pastor of St. Andrew’s Parish, LaSalle Ontario. Our Commodore casts a wreath upon the waters, followed by those members of our club who wish to remember a departed loved one by casting their wreaths. (If you would like to be included in the wreath presentation, please contact the office.) “Taps” is played at the conclusion of the Memorial Service.
Following the Memorial Service, all skippers, their first mates, families and guests are requested to return to their boats and await the Blessing of their boat. While their boat is being blessed, the skipper and first mate are asked to stand on the bow of their boat. Their families and guests are asked to stand on the finger docks during the procession to alleviate congestion on the main walk.
As per club tradition, the uniform of the day for the ceremony is white trousers, blazers and white caps for the Skippers and appropriate attire for first mates and guests, while their boats stand ready with full nautical flags and pennants hoisted aloft.
Before the Memorial Service, everyone is cordially invited to the Club where complimentary hors d’oeuvres are served from noon until 1:30 p.m. All members, regardless if you have a boat or not, are asked to contribute by donating their favorite hors d’oeuvres.
No matter what your faith--this is a universal Blessing. Start the boating season feeling secure by having your boat blessed. WYC members show their dedication to the Club by turning out in force for the Annual Blessing of the Fleet and give the Commodore, the board of directors and fellow members, a beautiful affair to remember.
We're proud to say that our members, past and present, have always enthusiastically endorsed and participated in this most solemn affair. You'll definitely want to invite relatives and friends; they're all welcome. Start your planning now.
Please make it a point to attend this function.
